The main CRaKN alternatives in 2026 are Passare, Gather, Osiris, Halcyon, The Director’s Assistant and FuneralHQ. CRaKN itself has not disappeared: Tribute Technology now sells it as Tribute Management Software, so your first decision is whether the renamed product still suits your firm. FuneralHQ publishes this article and is one of the options compared, so check each claim against the sources at the end. Every vendor description comes from that vendor’s own website, read in September 2026.
What is CRaKN, and who owns it now?
CRaKN, styled CRäKN by its makers, is cloud-based case management software for funeral homes, and Tribute Technology now sells it as Tribute Management Software. Case management software is a program that holds each family’s case record, from the first call through paperwork, scheduling and payment. The old crakn.net address redirects to a Tribute page headed "CRäKN is now Tribute Management Software".
Tribute Technology says on its product page that Tribute Management Software was released in October 2022, built with acquisitions and with people from Ionic, SRS Computing and CRaKN. Tribute’s page for CRaKN customers says the CRaKN team joined a larger development team, and that support now runs through Tribute. Neither Tribute page gives a date or terms for any purchase of CRaKN, so this article states none.
Trade reporting from 2020 described a sale of Tribute Technology that was not yet final. Funeral Director Daily reported on November 6, 2020, citing PE Hub, that Providence Strategic Growth had a deal, pending final documents, to sell Tribute Technology to the Carlyle Group and Vista Equity for "north of $1 billion", with Carlyle as majority owner. This article has not confirmed that the sale closed, and the Tribute pages read for it do not name Tribute’s current owners, so ask. See who owns funeral software companies.
What does CRaKN do well?
CRaKN’s strength is running the whole funeral home day, not only the case file. Tribute Technology describes Tribute Management Software as one system for cases, staff, rooms, vehicles and facility tasks. The features below come from Tribute’s product page.
- Digital whiteboard. A digital whiteboard is a shared screen that replaces the dry-erase board. Tribute says it can be cast to a television.
- Single entry. Case details and contacts are entered once, then fill forms and events.
- Online paperwork. Forms go to families to complete and e-sign.
- Staff scheduling. Staff confirm assigned tasks and get reminders by built-in text messaging.
- Calendar. Shows when staff, rooms and cars are booked.
- Connections. QuickBooks Online, Federated, Tribute Websites, Tribute Store and Tribute Pay.
Tribute Technology also says it will transfer data from your current management software, and that the product is cloud-based and works on any device. CRaKN and Tribute Tech both appear on ASD’s FuneralSync partner list, which matters if ASD takes your night calls.
Why do funeral homes look for a CRaKN alternative?
A funeral home may look for a CRaKN alternative for four reasons this article can support with a source: the seller changed, the price is not published, two features are still listed as future work, and public reviews are thin. None of the four says the software is poor.
- The seller changed. A firm that chose CRaKN now deals with Tribute Technology, which also sells websites, payments and marketing services.
- No published price. Tribute’s product page shows no dollar figure and directs buyers to a consultation or demo.
- Features still to come. Tribute’s page for CRaKN customers labels online payments and an online planner as future features, as read in September 2026.
- Thin public reviews. Capterra lists the product with 4 reviews, the latest dated January 31, 2021, as of September 2026.
A fifth reason is a need the Tribute product page does not describe. The page does not mention answering the phone, QuickBooks Desktop, or tracking a decedent by barcode or QR code. If one of those matters, ask Tribute directly, then compare. The article on funeral home software reviews explains how to weigh a listing with so few reviews.
What are the best CRaKN alternatives?
The CRaKN alternatives compared here are six products from other companies, plus SRS Computing for a firm content to stay with Tribute Technology. The table was built from each vendor’s own website in September 2026. "Published pricing" means a dollar figure you can read without a sales call.
| Product | Maker | Best suited to | Published pricing | Notable strength | Notable limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passare | Passare, Inc. | Firms that want family collaboration and a phone app | No | Planning Center, barcode tracking, iOS and Android apps | No price on its site |
| Gather | Gather | Firms that also want websites and livestreaming | No. Activation payment plus monthly subscription, by proposal | Says support, cases and users are unlimited | Not on ASD’s FuneralSync list |
| Osiris | Funeral Director’s Resource | Firms that want month-to-month terms | Showed from $79 a month, by at-need call volume, in September 2026. Confirm by quote | Two-way link with QuickBooks Desktop and Online | Exact price needs a quote |
| Halcyon | Halcyon Deathcare Management Solutions | Firms with crematory, pet or trade work | No. Activation fee plus monthly fee, no long-term contract | Not sold per user or per machine | E-signatures and QuickBooks are optional add-ons |
| SRS Computing | Tribute Technology | Firms that accept the same owner | No | Desktop and web versions | Same owner as CRaKN |
| The Director’s Assistant Web | Continental Computers | Firms that want accounting built in | No | General ledger, payroll and trust accounting included | No price on its site |
| FuneralHQ | FuneralHQ, publisher of this article | Independent firms that want the case record and phone answering together | Yes. Package prices are on its site | AI phone answering that drafts the first call sheet | Does not file with any state electronic death registration system |
Passare is built around collaboration between staff and families. Passare’s site lists Planning Center, eSignatures, barcode tracking, more than 40 integrations, and four AI tools. Passare says more than 2,600 funeral homes use it. The Passare alternatives guide covers it in depth.
Gather sells case management alongside websites, livestreaming and KeepTrack body tracking, so Gather suits a firm replacing its website and its case software together. Osiris’s pricing page showed a starting figure of $79 a month when read in September 2026, so confirm the figure with a quote. See the Gather alternatives and Osiris alternatives guides.
Halcyon says it has served deathcare for over 20 years. The Director’s Assistant dates to 1985, and Continental Computers describes itself as privately and majority independently owned. Read the Halcyon alternatives and Director’s Assistant alternatives guides before a demo.
SRS Computing is a fair choice only if ownership is not your concern, because Tribute Technology’s site says SRS is now part of Tribute. The SRS Computing alternatives guide and the best funeral home software list give more options, and the comparison pages set FuneralHQ beside each vendor.
CRaKN vs Passare: which one fits your firm?
CRaKN and Passare overlap on case records, whiteboards and online signatures, and differ on phone apps, decedent tracking and AI tools. CRaKN, as Tribute Management Software, leans toward scheduling staff, rooms and vehicles. Passare leans toward family planning and work done from a phone. Neither vendor publishes a price.
| Item | CRaKN (Tribute Management Software) | Passare |
|---|---|---|
| Published price | None | None |
| Whiteboard | Digital whiteboard that casts to a television | Whiteboards with colors, icons and labels |
| Family paperwork | Online forms with e-signature | Planning Center and eSignatures |
| Phone and tablet use | Cloud-based, on any device | Passare Mobile apps for iOS and Android |
| Decedent tracking | Not described on the product page | Barcode tracking |
| AI tools | Not described on the product page | Obituary writer, scanner, assistant and notetaker |
| Money tools named | QuickBooks Online and Federated connections | Payments, inventory, check writing and accounting |
| ASD FuneralSync partner | Yes | Yes |
Choose between CRaKN and Passare on the work your staff do daily. A firm that schedules a large staff across rooms and vehicles should test Tribute’s calendar and whiteboard. A firm whose directors work away from the office should test Passare Mobile. Ask both vendors for a written price.
How does each alternative handle the phone and the first call?
Six of the eight products in this guide connect to ASD, a live answering service, and FuneralHQ answers the call with its own assistant or takes first calls from an answering service. A first call is the phone call that reports a death to the funeral home.
ASD FuneralSync is an integration that pulls first call information and recordings from ASD into a funeral home’s management program, and sends service information from the firm’s website to ASD. ASD’s partner list names Crakn, Tribute Tech, Passare, SRS Computing, Halcyon, Osiris Software and Continental Computers.
| Product | On ASD’s FuneralSync list | What the vendor’s site says about calls |
|---|---|---|
| CRaKN (Tribute Management Software) | Yes | No phone answering described |
| Passare | Yes | Names call services among its integrations |
| Gather | No | No phone answering described |
| Osiris | Yes | Shows ASD among its partners |
| Halcyon | Yes | Sends service details to ASD and imports first calls from ASD |
| SRS Computing | Yes | No phone answering described |
| The Director’s Assistant Web | Yes | Names ASD and FuneralCall among its connections |
| FuneralHQ | Ask which services are connected | AI phone answering built in. First calls from an answering service arrive by direct feed or email intake |
FuneralHQ’s AI phone answering is optional and stays off until your firm switches it on for a location and a phone number. In the default mode, "Only when staff cannot answer", your staff phones ring first. The assistant speaks the greeting you wrote and asks one question at a time.
The result of a FuneralHQ call is a draft first call sheet with the summary, recording and transcript attached. A first call sheet is the form that records who died, where, and whom to call back. A person reviews and confirms the draft. The assistant never creates a case, never states a price or a cause of death, and never promises a pickup time.
When is staying with CRaKN the right call?
Staying with CRaKN is the right call when the software still fits your daily work and the name is the only thing that changed. Tribute Technology tells CRaKN customers they keep the features they already use. Retraining staff and moving records carries a real cost. Stay if these describe your firm:
- Your staff rely on the whiteboard, calendar and task confirmations every day.
- Your website or payments already run on Tribute products.
- ASD answers your night calls, and FuneralSync delivers them into your software.
- Your accountant works in QuickBooks Online or Federated.
Before you renew with Tribute Technology, ask for three things in writing: the price for each location for the next three years, the release status of online payments and the online planner, and the terms for exporting your records.
How do you switch from CRaKN without losing records?
You switch from CRaKN without losing records by exporting everything before you give notice, checking the export against live cases, and running both systems side by side until the old cases close. Do the export while your login still works. The guide to exporting funeral home data before switching covers the export itself.
| Record | What to ask for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cases | Every case, open and closed, as a spreadsheet or CSV file | Families return years later |
| Contacts | Families, clergy, cemeteries, hospices and vendors | Saves retyping |
| Preneed contracts | Each contract with its funding source and amounts | Each becomes a case later |
| Signed documents | The signed files, not only a list of them | A signature cannot be collected twice |
| Price lists | Your current General Price List | The next system is set up from it |
| Open balances | Invoices, payments and amounts owed | Collections continue during the move |
- Read your contract for the notice period and renewal date.
- Ask Tribute Technology which export formats it offers, whether documents are included, and whether there is a fee.
- Ask how long you can sign in after you cancel, and when your data is deleted.
- Export everything, then check ten cases at random against the live system.
- Send a sample export to the next vendor and ask for a written field map.
- Enter cases in the next system from a set date, and keep CRaKN for cases in progress.
- Cancel only after the last open case in CRaKN is closed.
The length of a changeover depends on the vendor and the state of your records, and no source gives a single figure. Halcyon’s site says it builds a system within 2 business days of receiving your details. FuneralHQ’s migration checklist sets out a seven-day plan, and the migration guide explains each stage. See also what data to bring over and what happens in week one.
How FuneralHQ handles this
FuneralHQ keeps one case record from first call to final payment: first call intake, case management, tasks, a whiteboard, documents, unlimited e-signatures, family text and email, card and ACH payments, preneed, and sync with QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop. The General Price List is kept once, and the Statement of Funeral Goods and Services is built from the same line items. FuneralHQ includes QR and barcode scan checkpoints for chain of custody. AI phone answering is optional and drafts a first call sheet that a person confirms. For the whole picture, see what funeral home software does. FuneralHQ comes in three packages, Platform, Growth, and Growth Managed, shown in the pricing section.
FuneralHQ is not the right choice for every firm. FuneralHQ does not file with any state electronic death registration system, and it offers no Spanish documents, Spanish family pages or Outlook sync. A firm that wants a person on every call should keep a live answering service. A firm that depends on a published integration such as ASD FuneralSync should confirm the connection before it moves. A firm already well served by its current system has no reason to switch.
Questions to ask any vendor on a demo
Ask every vendor the same questions and write the answers down. The eight below apply to Tribute Technology as much as to FuneralHQ.
- What is the full monthly price for my locations, and what is billed separately?
- Who owns your company today, and has that changed in five years?
- Are you on ASD’s FuneralSync partner list, and what moves between the systems?
- How does a night call reach the case record, and who types it in?
- Which QuickBooks editions do you connect to?
- Which features on your website are live today, and which are planned?
- What will my export contain if I leave, and what will it cost?
- How do you protect my records, and who on your staff can see them?
Common questions about CRaKN alternatives
Is CRaKN still available?
Yes, under a different name. Tribute Technology sells the product as Tribute Management Software, and the old crakn.net address redirects to a Tribute page for existing customers. Tribute says CRaKN customers keep the features they use and get support from Tribute by phone, email and live chat.
How much does CRaKN cost?
CRaKN pricing is not published. Tribute Technology’s page for Tribute Management Software shows no dollar figure, and Capterra’s listing says to contact the vendor, as of September 2026. Ask Tribute for a written price that covers every location, setup, data transfer and any add-on you expect to use.
Does CRaKN work with ASD?
Yes, according to ASD. The FuneralSync page on ASD’s site lists both Crakn and Tribute Tech among its integration partners. ASD says FuneralSync pulls first call information and recordings from ASD into the management program. Confirm with Tribute which functions your account has switched on.
Does CRaKN work with QuickBooks?
Tribute Technology’s product page says Tribute Management Software connects to QuickBooks Online and Federated, and does not name QuickBooks Desktop. A firm on QuickBooks Desktop can compare Osiris, Halcyon and The Director’s Assistant, whose sites each name QuickBooks Desktop. FuneralHQ syncs with QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop.
Is SRS Computing a good CRaKN alternative?
SRS Computing is an alternative in features but not in ownership. Tribute Technology’s site says SRS Computing is now part of Tribute, the same company that sells Tribute Management Software. A firm leaving CRaKN because of its owner should look at vendors outside Tribute.
Which CRaKN alternative publishes its price?
Two of the seven showed a dollar figure in September 2026. Osiris’s pricing page showed a starting figure of $79 a month, based on at-need call volume, so confirm it with a quote. FuneralHQ lists its package prices on its own site. Passare, Gather, Halcyon, SRS Computing and The Director’s Assistant show no dollar figure on the pages read for this article.
What do CRaKN reviews say?
Public reviews of CRaKN are too few to guide a decision. Capterra lists Tribute Management Software (formerly CRaKN) with 4 reviews and a 5.0 rating, the latest dated January 31, 2021, as of September 2026. Those reviews predate the October 2022 release of the renamed product.
Can an AI assistant replace my answering service?
An AI assistant can cover the calls your staff miss, but a live answering service remains the better fit for a firm that wants a person on every call. FuneralHQ’s assistant can answer only when staff cannot, after hours, or always, and you can keep your answering service alongside it.
The FuneralHQ advantage
Why FuneralHQ is the strongest starting point for an independent firm
Start with the daily case, the work every firm must complete well. FuneralHQ connects that core without forcing an independent operator into a wider enterprise suite.
