Who Owns Funeral Home Software Companies in 2026? An Ownership Map

Funeral software has been changing hands. This map lists who owns each vendor as of September 28, 2026, how that is known, and what to check in your own contract.

By the FuneralHQ Editorial Team  14 min read  Updated September 28, 2026

For owners and managers who want to know who stands behind the software that holds their records.

A funeral director working at a laptop showing an organized case dashboard, at a warm wooden office desk.
One organized case record keeps every detail in one place, from first call to final disposition.

Six funeral software names that once sold separately are now presented under one company, Tribute Technology: SRS Computing, CRaKN, Frazer Consultants, FrontRunner Professional, FuneralTech and Consolidated Funeral Services. Tribute’s page for CRaKN calls that change a partnership. Passare names Directors Investment Group as its parent company, and Halcyon belongs to Batesville. This map of who owns funeral home software companies was checked on September 28, 2026, and each line is traced to a company statement or a named trade publication. FuneralHQ publishes this article and is one of the companies on the map.

Who owns the main funeral home software companies?

The owners fall into four groups: a technology group, a supplier to funeral homes, a company with an outside investor, and the people who run the firm. A parent company is a company that owns a controlling share of another company. The table lists eleven products and the owner that each vendor, or a named trade publication, has stated in public.

A company statement means the vendor’s own site names the owner, and trade press means a named publication reported it. "Owner not published" means no ownership statement was found on the vendor’s site on the date checked. What is Tribute Technology, and which products sit under it?

Tribute Technology is a funeral technology company, founded in 2018, that sells websites, management software, payments and marketing tools to funeral homes. In December 2025 Tribute Technology said it serves more than 9,000 providers worldwide. Six brands that once sold separately now appear under Tribute Technology, five on Tribute’s site and one, CFS, on its own.

Who has owned Tribute Technology?

Private equity firms have held Tribute Technology and its brands since 2018, according to trade press reports. Private equity is investment money, raised from institutions, that buys companies outright or in part. Tribute Technology’s about page named no investor on September 28, 2026, so the timeline separates what was reported from what the company announced.

Which funeral software is owned by a casket company, an insurer, or another supplier?

Two management systems on this map have a supplier as parent: Halcyon, owned by Batesville, and Passare, whose parent, Directors Investment Group, is also the parent of Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company. A supplier-owned product is software whose parent also sells funeral homes something else, such as caskets or insurance. An online planning tool, eFuneral, was reported as a third in 2019.

Passare’s about page names Directors Investment Group as its parent company. Connecting Directors reported on April 8, 2015 that the investment made Passare a subsidiary and that Passare’s first investors stayed on as shareholders. For the product itself, see Passare alternatives.

Kates-Boylston reported on September 4, 2024 that Batesville had acquired Halcyon and that owners Sara and Perry Gard joined Batesville with their employees. Batesville has an owner of its own: Batesville announced on February 1, 2023 that LongRange Capital had completed its purchase of Batesville from Hillenbrand, and LongRange Capital’s site listed Batesville in its current portfolio on September 28, 2026. Halcyon alternatives compares the product with others.

Batesville sold two other technology lines in 2025. Connecting Directors reported on July 17, 2025 that Tukios had acquired Batesville’s website hosting services, and PlotBox announced on October 15, 2025 that it had acquired the MIS management platform. Neither announcement gave a price.

Which funeral software companies are still independent or founder-led?

Three vendors publish a plain statement about their own ownership: Osiris, Continental Computers and FDMS. Founder-led means a founder still holds a leadership role, which says nothing about who holds the shares. Gather and PlotBox are founder-led, and of the two only PlotBox has announced an outside investor.

  • Osiris. The Osiris about page says the company is "independently owned and operated", and names Funeral Director’s Resource as its parent.
  • Continental Computers. The maker of The Director’s Assistant says it is "majority independently owned and family owned". Ask who holds the remainder.
  • FDMS. The FDMS news page reports that on September 30, 2019 Jake Johnson announced the sale and transfer of his ownership to Santosh Chaudhary, a co-owner since 2015.
  • Gather. The Gather team page lists Zach Chatterton as founder and chairman and names no investors.
  • PlotBox. PlotBox announced an investment from Serent Capital on April 22, 2025. Founders Sean McAllister and Leona McAllister are chief executive and chief commercial officer.
  • FuneralHQ. FuneralHQ is the publisher of this article and an independent software company.

An independent owner does not decide whether a product fits your firm. Compare the products in Director’s Assistant alternatives, or open the side-by-side comparisons that FuneralHQ publishes.

Why does ownership matter to a funeral home?

Ownership matters because an owner decides where development money goes, who answers support calls, what you pay at renewal, how you get records out, and whose contract terms apply. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, whose statistics page was last updated on September 29, 2025, the United States has 15,401 funeral homes, and approximately 75% are family or privately owned. The public record shows what a change of owner has looked like, and none of it makes one kind of owner better than another.

  • Product roadmap. When Tribute Technology brought three brands under its name in 2023, it said clients could keep their existing products, and it offered free migrations to its latest technology.
  • Support. Continental Computers says its support staff, management and ownership work in one place. Tribute Technology directs SRS customers to a Tribute contact form and phone line.
  • Continuity. Batesville bought Halcyon in September 2024 and sold its MIS platform to PlotBox thirteen months later. PlotBox said it would keep serving MIS customers.
  • Pricing, contract terms and data access. None of the announcements cited here says what happens to customer prices or how records are exported. Your signed agreement is the record that counts.

What should you check in your contract when your vendor changes hands?

Check five clauses: data export, price changes, term and renewal, support commitments, and assignment. An assignment clause is the part of a contract that says whether a party may transfer the agreement to another company. This article is general information and not legal, tax, or financial advice. Contract rules differ by state, so have your attorney read anything you are asked to sign.

Contract checklist for a change of vendor ownership
ClauseWhat to find in your agreementWhat to ask the vendor in writing
Data exportWhether you can export every record and document, in what format, and at what costCan I run a full export myself today?
Price changesThe notice the vendor must give, and any cap on an increaseWill my price hold until my renewal date?
Term and renewalThe end date, whether the agreement renews by itself, and the notice needed to cancelWhat is my renewal date?
Support commitmentsSupport hours, response times, and who provides the supportWho answers my support calls after the change?
AssignmentWhether the vendor may transfer your agreement to a buyer, and whether you may leave if it doesWhich legal entity now holds my agreement?

How do you protect your records whoever owns the vendor?

Keep your own copy. A periodic export, stored where your firm controls it, is the one protection that does not depend on any vendor, owner or contract.

  1. Put the questions in data ownership questions for software vendors to your vendor, and keep the answers.
  2. Run a full export on a schedule you choose, for example each quarter. How to export funeral home data lists what to include.
  3. Open the export and confirm that cases, contacts, signed documents and payment history are all there.
  4. Store the export where your firm controls access.
  5. Ask how long the vendor keeps backups and what happens to them when you leave. Backups and data retention has the questions.

What if you decide to switch after an ownership change?

Export first, ask second, and cancel last, because your contract decides how long your login works after you give notice.

  • What to export. Cases, contacts, preneed contracts, signed documents, price lists, and payment history.
  • What to ask the old vendor. The file formats on offer, any export fee, and how long your access lasts after notice.
  • How long a changeover takes. The time depends on the number of records you move. Ask each vendor for a written timeline before you sign.

The migration guide sets out the steps in order. Before you choose a replacement, read funeral home software reviews.

What are Frazer, FrontRunner, FDMS, Mortware and Continental today?

Frazer and FrontRunner now lead to Tribute Technology. FDMS, Mortware and Continental Computers still trade under their own names. The table shows each name, plus Batesville, as it stood on September 28, 2026.

FDMS describes its ownership in two places. The FDMS home page says the company is owned and operated by experienced funeral professionals, and the FDMS news page names Santosh Chaudhary as full owner since 2019. Mortware’s site gives no ownership statement beyond its copyright notice.

How FuneralHQ handles this

FuneralHQ is an independent software company and the publisher of this article. FuneralHQ’s funeral home case management software keeps one case record from first call to final payment: intake, case management, tasks, documents, unlimited e-signatures, family text and email, card and ACH payments, preneed, and QuickBooks Online sync. FuneralHQ’s published security page says your records belong to your firm, that you can export them at any time, and that you have at least 30 days to export after you end service.

FuneralHQ is not the right choice for every firm. FuneralHQ does not file death certificates electronically with state death registration systems, and it does not offer Spanish documents, Spanish family pages, or Outlook sync. A firm that is already well served by its current system and its vendor relationship has no reason to switch.

Questions to ask any vendor about ownership and data

  1. Who owns the company today, and what share does each owner hold?
  2. Has ownership changed in the last five years, and is a change planned?
  3. Does the owner also sell caskets, insurance, or other products to funeral homes?
  4. Which legal entity is named on my contract, and can the contract be assigned without my consent?
  5. Can I export every case, document and payment record myself, and at what cost?
  6. How much notice will I get before a price change?
  7. Is the product I use still being developed, or will I be asked to move to another?
  8. Who provides support, and during which hours?

Common questions about funeral software ownership

Who owns Passare?

Directors Investment Group is the parent company of Passare, according to Passare’s about page. Connecting Directors reported in April 2015 that Directors Investment Group is also the parent of Funeral Directors Life Insurance Company, and that Passare’s first investors stayed on as shareholders.

Is Frazer Consultants still in business?

Frazer Consultants is now part of Tribute Technology. Tribute announced on April 18, 2023 that Frazer, FrontRunner Professional and FuneralTech would be brought under the Tribute name, and said clients could keep their existing websites and software. Tribute’s site keeps a page for Frazer customers.

Is CRaKN the same as Tribute Management Software?

Tribute Technology presents Tribute Management Software as the next phase of CRaKN. The company’s CRaKN page describes the change as a partnership with Tribute Technology and gives no date. An announcement that Tribute acquired CRaKN was not found, so the legal relationship is not confirmed from a public source as of September 2026.

Who owns Batesville?

LongRange Capital owns Batesville. Batesville announced on February 1, 2023 that LongRange Capital had completed its acquisition of the company from Hillenbrand, and LongRange Capital’s site listed Batesville in its current portfolio on September 28, 2026. Batesville bought Halcyon in September 2024, and in 2025 sold its website hosting services to Tukios and its MIS platform to PlotBox.

Is SRS Computing still supported?

Tribute Technology says SRS is part of Tribute and that more than 5,000 businesses run on SRS software. Tribute’s SRS page lists desktop and web-based versions, with a contact form and phone line for existing customers. The former SRS web address forwarded to that page on September 28, 2026.

Who owns Gather funeral home software?

Gather does not publish its ownership. The Gather team page lists Zach Chatterton as founder and chairman and names no investors. This article records Gather as privately held, with its owner not published, as of September 28, 2026. Ask Gather directly if ownership matters to your decision.

Does a change of owner change my contract?

Start with your signed agreement. Your price, term and support commitments are what that contract says, and the assignment clause says whether the contract can pass to a buyer. Ask the vendor to confirm those terms in writing, and have your attorney review anything you are asked to sign.

How often does funeral software ownership change?

The sources for this map record nine ownership events between 2018 and 2025. Three involve Tribute Technology, in 2018, 2020 and 2023. Four involve Batesville: its own sale in 2023, its purchase of Halcyon in 2024, and two sales in 2025. FDMS changed hands in 2019, and PlotBox took outside investment in 2025.
